Fact Filled Friday: Pigeons, Ocean Organs, and Oreos

This past week has been incredibly stressful, so let's look at learning something new, perhaps sometimes fun, and maybe I can make a trend of this.

Here's an article I found this week:
Pigeons Learn to Spot Breast Cancer

So, pigeons are able to spot breast cancer on mammogram images with 99% accuracy.  Great!  But what I want to know is who profoundly posed the question, "Hey! I wonder if a pigeon can do my job!  Let's get a grant and figure it out!"

Okay, so they do have bird brains, but can be trained and do well with other work.  Look out America, it isn't a robot that will take your job, it will be a feathered bird I normally see stalking the sidewalk outside of my favorite steak house.

And now I wonder if the maker of a "Sea Organ" was watching SpongeBob when he has the idea to build this masterpiece:

You can read more about it here: "Sea Organ" Makes Haunting Music With Ocean Waves

Surely, for those who've either watched SpongeBob willingly or because it was on while you were in the room with your kids (or a combination of both), I am reminded of the episode where SpongeBob makes similar sounds with his sponge holes while an orchestra of pink, tentacled, zappy jellyfish maneuver around him as if he is some idol.  You remember, right?  Right?

Now, last but not least, there is some interesting news about Oreos.  Earlier this year I read that Oreos will now be made in Mexico.  Here's FactCheck.org's research on the topic, and it seems as if I may not have to boycott Oreos after all, although I am sure by hips would protest my new decision.  Take the time to read at least some of the article.  Turns out, once again the media hyped up a situation (along with Trump, apparently) surrounding the change in manufacturing.  The article also mentions the following: Oreo “biscuits” originated in New York in 1912, and they are now made at facilities in 18 countries and sold to consumers in more than 100 countries worldwide.

I hope everyone enjoys their weekend.  I am looking forward to watching college football, personally!
